Teach from an Early Age

Kids today are not stupid and they are often more street wise and savvy than we were when we were children. Many of the older generation today grew up in a very different atmosphere and environment, where the family unit was stronger and there were fewer crimes against children.

Children need to be educated on any potential risks, and to receive More Information on dangers from an early age – but without scaring them. They need to know about everything from playing near water, to crossing traffic to being aware – and beware – of strangers.

However, as in all things, we must do this objectively and with a careful balance as we do not wish our younger generation to become quivering wrecks. We want them to be aware but without fearing that a danger is lurking behind every corner. (more...)

Supervision is Key

Many parents tend to wrap up their children in kid gloves. Although our early years were spent outdoors climbing trees and riding bikes, we feel that the world is a much more dangerous place now and we try to keep them safe at a risk of stifling them and hindering their personal and social development.

It is the same with kid's toys. We find it harder to differentiate between childrens products which could be safe and those which are harmful. We fear that they will fall off a bike or that they will injure themselves on the swing. This is not helped by the suing culture that is becoming more prevalent today.

The key is moderation and supervision. We have to strike a careful balance between stopping our children from doing those activities which are clearly risky or potentially harmful; and allowing those activities which carry a minor element of risk. (more...)

Time to Chill

A child has more stress and worries than maybe their parents did. Life at school is getting more competitive and there is increasing pressure from family, teachers and peers to perform well. The job market is also increasingly competitive and it is no wonder that so many teenagers work very hard, much harder than their mum or dad did before them.

It is so important, then, that emphasis is placed on leisure time and to have a little bit of fun with a few glowsticks in the evening and to simply chill out and be teenagers.

It is tempting to work on homework and revision every night, but all work and no play makes Jack and Jill very dull playmates indeed. A little light hearted fun once a twice a week is vital to maintain that healthy balance in life. (more...)

A Big Responsibility

One of the greatest responsibilities – and achievement – of any person is raising their kids. From the moment they are born they are completely helpless and you are scared of hurting them even by changing their nappy or dressing them. Luckily, there is lots of help and advice for new parents from friends, family and experts.

As soon as you have established that your baby is not some china doll who is going to break, all of a sudden they are at the next stage of life. You spend the next fifteen years bringing them up, teaching them how to be good and responsible human beings and directing them through their education.

Suddenly, before you know it, the big eighteen looms up and it is time for them to make their own way in the world. For many though, the responsibility does not end there and there is the emotional support and finance required to get them through university. (more...)

The Simple Things in Life

One of the greatest joys of having kids is watching their joy and happiness to the most simple things in life. Before they move on to the stage where the latest technology is king, there are a few years where their little faces light up to small and simple pleasures.

Bonfire night is one example. A pack of sparklers so that they can Chillout with a glow a hot dog and a glass of squash. However cold it is and however much their noses run they are just happy to be there in the glow of the bonfire, clutching their sparklers in their gloved hands.

Though they have no idea of the intricacies of what bonfire night might mean, they just enjoy the simple pleasure of watching the fireworks in wonderment. (more...)

How to Save Money with Increased University Fees

With university fees on the increase, more and more students are looking for ways to save a bit of extra cash. Students are increasingly taking on part time work and making savings by budgeting on food, transport, course material, and rent. It's also important to get the best possible deal on your mobile, and a lot of companies have special deals for sim only for students.

One way of making your student loan go further is to make a realistic budget. Make a note of all of your necessary weekly outgoings – food, rent, bills, course materials, train tickets and so on. Then compare this with what's coming in – your student loan payments, any part time work you're doing. Every so often you'll find an emergency pops up that you haven't accounted for, so in your budget it's a good idea to put a little aside each week for a rainy day.

Buy food together with your housemates. You'll find it's much cheaper (and less wasteful) to pool your resources than to go it alone. (more...)
